Meet the Wath Academy Governors

Nicola Parr
Chair of Governors
Mrs Parr is a Chartered Accountant, with over 25 years working within BT Group & Openreach. She is currently the Finance Director for Chief Engineer & Infrastructure Development, supporting large teams who are building full fibre to over 25m premises across the UK. She is also responsible for managing several large government-funded capital projects and leads on engagement.
Mrs Parr has over 14 years Governor experience, previously holding posts within the ECM Trust, most recently as a Trustee, as well as Vice-Chair and Chair of Resources.
She joined the Wath Academy Governance Committee in 2019 following a period supporting the Maltby Learning Trust as part of the Maltby Academy Governance Committee.
As a parent of 2 children who have attended Wath Academy, and a previous student herself, she is proud to be able to support the Academy into its next stage of development and growth.

Andrew Battle
Vice Chair of Governors
Mr Battle retired as an Assistant Chief Constable with West Yorkshire Police. He has over 30 years experience of working within the public sector and over 20 years of being in a leadership role.
His roles have given him substantial experience in performance management, change management, project and performance management as well as people development. Mr Battle has acted as chair of discipline tribunals and led on diversity and inclusion.
Having now retired Mr Battle is keen to put his experience to good use in a voluntary capacity and we are sure he can achieve this as a Governor within the Maltby Learning Trust.

Jayne Dickson
Vice Chair of Governors
Mrs Dickson has been employed by Rotherham Council for more than 35 years and currently manages a team with responsibility for developing and supporting a number of business applications used across the Council, including those for Adult and Childrens Social Care, Education, Legal, Housing and Libraries.
Mrs Dickson is a former student of Wath Comprehensive and has been a Governor at Wath Academy since 2012 when her daughter started in Year 7. Mrs Dickson is an experienced Governor, having previously held the position of Chair at both Wath Academy and a nearby Primary School. Mrs Dickson has seen the school undergo many changes and is proud to have the opportunity to support and contribute to its improvements.

Brian Tinnion
Appointed Governor
Mr Tinnion is a semi-retired Chartered Minerals Surveyor, having spent most of his career in the Coal Industry.
He is a former pupil of Wath Grammar School who subsequently became a Parent Governor at Wath Comprehensive School when his two daughters were pupils at the school.
Over the last 26 years as a Governor, he has had many roles and seen many changes take place including the recent change to Wath Academy.
He is currently a Community Governor on the Committee, with specific responsibility for Personal Development and Health and Safety.
Mr Tinnion is an experienced Governor who is passionate about the development of the Academy and its vision going forward.

Claire Garbutt
Appointed Governor
Claire has worked in Education for over 22 years and has held positions in mainstream schools as Early Years Lead, SENDCo, and various Senior Leadership roles including Executive Headteacher in a growing Trust.
During her career, Claire has coached and mentored staff at various levels in their development, from ITT to Senior Leaders and is actively engaged in facilitation of the National Professional Qualifications.
Claire has worked effectively and contributed to professional development provision on behalf of numerous Higher Education Institutions for many years, concentrating on initial teacher training and mentoring. Claire has been instrumental in devising structures and systems within Learners First Schools Partnership to support and enhance the training experience of early career professionals and has been integral in supporting the ongoing development of teachers in the formative years of their career.
Recently, Claire has completed and been awarded a PGCE in Attachment, Trauma and Mental Health and has been instrumental in supporting leaders in mainstream settings to develop and embed nurture settings to support the most vulnerable children in school and their families.
Claire currently works as Executive Assurance Partner with Nexus Multi Academy Trust. Claire is passionate about inclusion and works with an array of staff across the Trust, ranging from Executive Headteachers to Early Careers Teachers. She is currently working with partners to deliver a bespoke Level 3 Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship to colleagues across the Trust.

Michael Thornton
Appointed Governor
Mr Thornton worked in the telecommunications industry as a Technical Support Engineer, before joining the Department for Education via a policy Apprenticeship. He is now a Senior Policy Adviser and supports Local Authorities to improve outcomes for children's social care. He attended Wath Comprehensive school and has a passion for continuous professional development.
Although this is Mr Thornton's first school governance role, he has 12 years experience as a charity Trustee, supporting young people with a visual impairment to access high quality mentoring support. -
Lynn Dixon
Parent Governor
Lynn has spent the last 12 years working as a course leader and lecturer at the University of Sheffield. She ran the Masters course for Broadcast Journalism, focusing on teaching television, radio and digital news reporting. Lynn was also a staff mentor, gained the Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education (PGCHE), and sat on the board of the industry accrediting body, Broadcast Journalism Training Council (BJTC).
Before that, Lynn was a TV and radio news reporter and presenter, working on a number of stations and programmes including BBC Radio 1, Calendar ITV, BBC Radio Sheffield and Hallam FM. She is also a voiceover artist and produces commercial podcast content.
As a mum of two children who both currently attend Wath Academy, and a former student at Wath Comprehensive School herself, Lynn is passionate about supporting the school.
Other qualifications include a Postgraduate Diploma in Broadcast Journalism, BA Hons Contemporary Arts, Drama and Music, and Associate Victoria College of Music (A.V.C.M). -
Lindsey Sandberg
Parent Governor
Ms Sandberg has worked in education for over 22 years and currently works as Deputy Headteacher and SENDCo at Wath C of E Primary School. She is passionate about inclusion and supporting all children in their learning journey. Ms Sandberg has previously worked as Inclusion Lead for a large Trust and for the Local Authority within the Inclusion Support Service. Ms Sandberg was previously a student at Wath Comprehensive school and currently has a child in Year 9. She is committed to supporting the school and the community it serves.

Sheryl Casey
Staff Governor (Teacher)
Mrs Casey is entering her 25th year of teaching, the last 17 of these having been at Wath Academy, having taught at 3 other local secondary schools. Currently on the SLT, she has previously secured excellent progress for students in her role as Head of Maths at the Academy.
Mrs Casey is an experienced Governor, who has previously been a Vice-Chair of Governors at a local primary school. Having attended Wath herself, having a child who has just left the Academy and another due to join in September, she is passionate about delivering exceptional learning experiences for all pupils in our community. -
Richard Matthews
Staff Governor (Associate Professional)
Mr Matthews is currently working at Wath Academy in the role of Physical/Sensory Manager and is starting his 17th year at the school, Mr Matthews has worked for 20 years in Rotherham secondary schools. Mr Matthews specialises in 1 to 1 lesson support for students with disabilities, risk assessing and administration. Mr Matthews is an experienced Governor and has previously served on a primary board.

Liam Ransome
Principal
Mr Ransome was appointed as the new Principal at Wath Academy in September 2020. As Deputy Headteacher at Kingswood Academy, he was responsible for Teaching and Learning, Behaviour, Inclusion and Attendance, and was part of the senior leadership team which led the school from ‘Inadequate’ to ‘Good’, delivering a Progress 8 score of +1.17. He has also worked as Deputy Headteacher at Amnuay SIlpa Bilingual School in Bangkok, Thailand where he implemented a safeguarding system, a new behaviour and rewards policy, attendance and punctuality systems and created the inhouse staff leadership development programme. In the summer of 2022 at Wath Academy, Mr Ransome and his team delivered the academies best ever results with outcomes that place them well above national averages for progress and attainment. An exciting new curriculum which includes Enrichment during the school day has also been developed and is set to launch in September 2023.
